UKCCSC News 8 July 2011

Hello everyone,

Robin has gone on maternity leave (a bit earlier than we expected, but mother and baby are doing well!), so I am covering for her while she is away. Please do contact me with any questions you might have relating to UKCCSC at ukccsc@ed.ac.uk or via my email address (elizabeth.vandermeer@ed.ac.uk ). You’ll find the latest key internal, national and international news listed below.

Thank you and all the best,

Liz

Internal UKCCSC News

The Carbon Capture Research Meeting will be held on 14 July at University of Nottingham, jointly hosted by the CO2Chem and UKCCSC networks. The 2^nd UKCCSC Early Career Researcher Annual Meeting follows on 15 July, also at University of Edinburgh. Details of both events can be found on the UKCCSC website meeting pages here.

Registration is now open for the UKCCSC Biannual Meeting and Carbon Capture and Storage Conference, hosted by UKCCSC and IPA. If you are part of the academic community or a non-industry affiliate, registration is available via our website here. If you are an industry representative, to register please contact Helen Tulloch at IPA (h.tulloch@ipa-scotland.org.uk . Details of the conference can also be found on the registration page.

National and International News

1) The UK Climate Change Committee published a report on Renewable Energy, with more on CCS than might be expected from the title. From the abstract (i.e. I’ve not read 99 % of the report…)

“…carbon capture and storage may also emerge as a cost-effective technology…”

2) A report by The Policy Exchange, a UK think-tank with ‘centre-right values’:

“U.K. Urged to Abolish Renewable Goals, Spend Less to Cut CO_2 ” May 5 (Bloomberg)

“The [EU renewables] target diverts current and future resources away from measures that could save the same amount of carbon at a lower cost, such as energy efficiency, nuclear and carbon-capture and storage…”

3) “Carbon capture and storage project at Mountaineer termed a success” May 5 (Power-Gen Worldwide)

“Alstom Power said it completed successful testing and operation of a chilled-ammonia carbon capture and storage (CCS) validation project at American Electric Power’s 1,300 MW Mountaineer Plant in New Haven, WV.”

4) “Vattenfall has started the injection of carbon dioxide into the Ketzin reservoir” Bellona (5 May)

“…around 2,000 tonnes of CO2 will be transported and stored 200 kilometres from … Schwarze Pumpe”

5) Transport stories are rare:

“WWF hails Longannet carbon capture plan” The Courier (17 Jun)

“ScottishPower, National Grid and Shell UK want to use an existing 280km-long natural gas pipe…”

6) Proving you can’t believe everything you read in the news:

“Top 10 degree courses for the low-carbon economy” businessGreen (25 May)

“Edinburgh University offers a masters degree in carbon capture and storage, as does Loughborough” We can’t find the Loughborough one on their website.

7) “US National Carbon Capture Center opens post-combustion test center” Carbon Capture Journal (08 Jun)

“The PC4 is located at the Alabama Power Gaston power plant Unit 5, an 880 MW supercritical pulverized coal unit.”

8) ECN and Ecofys published two studies on CCS in the international climate regime, part of Dutch CATO-2 programme.

The first study includes a marginal abatement cost curve for CCS in developing countries, and shows that inclusion of CCS in the CDM is likely to have only a limited impact on the CER market up to 2020.

The second publication reviews existing bi/multilateral support mechanisms for CCS and concludes these are missing out on important elements. It provides several options for advancing CCS in the international climate regime.

9) There’s nothing like a prediction of the future to generate laughs in retrospect:

European Investment Bank “EIB May Be Ready to Sell CO2 Permits From Second Half, EU Says” Bloomberg, 17 May

“The EIB will sell the allowances to raise about 5 billion euros ($7 billion) to support low-emission technologies including carbon capture and storage.”
