EU Zero Emission Power Plant ZEP

EU energy research

The European union has funded research specifically on CCS during FP5 and FP6. This will forma a key partof the EU objective to limit temperature rise globally to just 2 Centigrade over 1990 levels. Some people (us included) think that is very laudable, but a difficult task, given the slow rate of worldwide progress. An overview of EU research in all "Sustainable" energy areas is at http://ec.europa.eu/research/energy/pdf/portfolios_report_en.pdf This contains overviews of each technology area. Identifies the key strengths and activities in EU. This summarizes key EU projects and compares to USA and japanese activity and funding levels. In terms of CO2, the vision is to try and target CO2 emissions form power plant first, then to move towards reducing transport emissions by switching to biofuel, electricity and hydrogen vectors.

EU Zero Emission Power Plant

An important and well co-ordinated EU industry initiative is to create a Technology Platform to encourage EU research, development and especially Demonstration (leading to Deployment) of clean power plant. In 2006, this is mainly focused on coal plant, with gas plant more subject to fuel price. Pan EU meetings have been held in Brussels during 2005 and 2006. These resulted in policy documents, which provide a vision to cleaner coal power for the EU. The summary Vision document is at http://ec.europa.eu/research/energy/pdf/zero_emission_ffpp_en.pdf The reports of meetings contain a wealth of information and are accessed at http://www.zero-emissionplatform.eu/website/
